How to measure your nipple

Using the right size flanges is incredibly important. It all starts with measuring your nipples so that you can narrow down the range of sizes to try. It sounds weird and intimidating, but it's super easy. Before we show you how to measure, here are three things to know:

  • You are measuring your nipples, not your areola (the darker circle around the nipple), and definitely not your breast.
  • Do not measure the flanges.
  • Measure your nipples before you pump.

To measure your nipples, you'll need a tape measure or a ruler (or see below for alternative options) and follow these simple three steps.

Step 1:

Before pumping or nursing, roll your nipple between your thumb and index finger to slightly stimulate it.

Step 2:

Place the ruler at the base of the nipple where it meets the areola. Measure in mm (for reference: 1cm = 10mm). It's OK if you can't tell your areola apart from your nipple. Just try your best.

Step 3:

Repeat for the other nipple. You need to measure both nipples because it's not uncommon for them to be different sizes.

Don't have a tape measure or ruler? You can print one out. This printable ruler from Maymom is designed to measure your nipple.

Don't have a printer or don't want to waste a piece of paper? You can use coins (US) and other objects you find around your house to measure instead.
